James J. McSharry, Ph.D.

Research Focus

Dr. McSharry has developed rapid, quantitative methods involving flow cytometry for measuring virus replication in virus-infected cells. He has used this technology to develop drug susceptibility assays for antiviral drugs effective against human immunodeficiency virus, herpes simplex viruses, cytomegalovirus, and influenza viruses. He is applying this technology to study the pharmacodynamics of antiviral drugs effective against human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis C virus, and poxviruses.

The focus of the laboratory is to use a novel in vitro hollow fiber pharmacodynamic system and mathematical modeling to define the dosage and frequency of administration of antiviral drugs. Specifically, to design dosing strategies that optimize their effectiveness and minimize the probability that the infecting pathogens will become resistant to the antiviral agent during therapy. The mathematical modeling studies are carried out by Dr. George Drusano of the Ordway Research Institute.
